A Love Story Written in the Stars

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what stories the stars carry?

For thousands of years, people in China have looked toward two stars, Vega and Altair. These two stars are known as Zhinü and Niulang, the lovers at the heart of Qixi, Chinese Valentine’s Day.

This year, the Chinese Valentine’s Day falls on August 19th, the 7th day of the 7th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It’s a special time to celebrate love and reconnect with one of China’s most cherished stories about the power of devotion.

The story begins with Zhinü, the daughter of the Heavenly Emperor. She was a goddess gifted with the ability to weave beautiful clouds and create the colors of the sky. Niulang was a humble mortal cowherd living a simple life on Earth.

One day, Zhinü descended from the heavenly realm and met Niulang. The moment they encountered each other, they fell deeply in love and chose to build a life together.

But when the Heavenly Emperor discovered that his daughter had married a mortal, he was furious. He forced Zhinü to return to the heavens and created a river of stars between them(the Milky Way), separating the two lovers forever.

Yet their love and devotion were so powerful that even the magpies were moved. Once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, thousands of magpies gather together to form a bridge across the Milky Way, allowing the lovers to reunite for one precious night.

Many people see this as a story of sadness and separation. But through the lens of Tantra, we can also discover a deeper wisdom within this ancient story.

Love is not only about constant physical closeness. Love is a state of being.

The reunion of Zhinü and Niulang reminds us that when we truly meet another person; when we see our beloved with full presence, openness, and love, we experience a sacred union with each other, and with ourselves.

Perhaps this is the invitation hidden within their story:

Even when we see someone every day, do we truly meet them?

Do we celebrate their presence, or have we slowly begun to take their love for granted?

This Qixi, we invite you to create your own sacred reunion with your beloved or your beloved self.

Set aside a time to truly meet each other. Dress beautifully for one another. Create a space that feels like a sanctuary. Prepare a meal together. Slow down and taste each moment. Look into each other’s eyes. Allow yourself to reconnect beyond daily routines and remember the love that brought you together.

And if you are walking this journey alone, this is also a beautiful opportunity to celebrate the most important relationship, the one with yourself.

Play your favorite music. Take yourself somewhere meaningful. Prepare something special for yourself. Offer yourself the same presence, tenderness, and devotion that you would give to someone you love.

Because love begins within.
